Social Networking and Viral Marketing for Businesses
Many people have heard of Web 2.0, but not many actually know what it means or stands for. Web 2.0 actually evolved out of the dot com crash of 2001. It encompasses websites where the user or member generates the content. The user does this by way of creating profiles on Facebook and MySpace, starting a blog on Blogger, adding articles to Wikipedia, uploading and sharing videos on YouTube.
Web 2.0 sites have the ability to boost you main website’s online ranking by way of viral marketing; but this concept is both hard to comprehend for some people, and also difficult to implement adequately.
Hopefully this guide will point you in the right direction.
Firstly it’s important you set up accounts with Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn and any other social website you deem appropriate for your type of business. Then secure your Company/personal name within the URL of the site (Facebook call this a vanity address). For example, I have secured www.facebook.com/lawrencesykes and www.twitter.com/lawrencesykes as I want to promote me as an author and create a personal following; I don’t wish to be tied too much to one blog, as I am involved with industry specific blogs like www.mechanical-seals.net for example. By creating a following for myself I can then direct traffic to any site I like without viewer confusion and type casting
Once you have these accounts open you then need to build up a quality following of friends. Once you reach a good number you are then able to send a percentage of traffic to any new websites, pages, products or articles which you want to promote. (Make sure you add a Social Bookmark facility like the one at the end of this post). I have read that an average of between 5% and 7% of your total followers on Twitter will click on any link you ‘Tweet’ (post).
Another fantastic way to send new traffic to your websites is to create quality videos. If you have a skill or know how to make something or even if you have a stupid yet funny talent; make a ‘how to’ video and upload it on to YouTube. It’s important however to make sure you set up the ‘Tags’ (keywords) correctly so that people searching will be able to find the video. Another hint is to use the free Movie Editing software provided by Microsoft, to add a subtitle or watermark to the video. This prevents other people from stealing your video, and if they do, it will further promote your site.
If the product is something unique and popular, the viewer will then bookmark the page and this is called ‘Viral’ marketing.
