In the 11th Century BC (or thereabouts), a group of nomadic herdsmen several hundred strong descended from the mountains to a fertile plain, where they hoped to settle. Other people were already there and confrontation soon developed.

Just like when you try to muscle in on someone else’s market.

Although both tribes were similar in size and equipped with comparable weaponry, the defenders had a strategic advantage in that one of them was a giant eight feet tall. This gave him a longer stabbing reach that made him unassailable. Not unlike a competitor who gets a special discount on the goods you sell.

This is one of the most frustrating things in retail.

Customers are fickle. Don’t we all shop where things are cheapest?

The traditional way to counter threats like this is to enter into a savage price war. But, is this the only thing that you could do?

Perhaps it’s not. You just need to think it through.

When the giant walked out to challenge the invaders, they stepped back in fear.

What choices did they have? To die, or to flee ignominiously in terror?

There was one possibility that didn’t cross their minds though, until a shepherd boy who was barely five feet tall stepped forward.

The giant laughed out loud. “How hilarious,” he said. “You send a boy out against me? His arms are too short still, and I’m more powerful than him.”

This time it was the defenders who made the mistake.

You know the rest I’m sure.

The young lad killed the giant with the catapult he previously used on wolves that preyed on his sheep.

This story has everything to do with business too.

In Goliath’s mind, David would come at him with a sword. The boy changed the paradigm when he engaged in longer-distance combat instead.

This time it was the giant who was disempowered. He probably didn’t even stand a chance.

Some businesspeople also lock into single methods of engagement. This is the fault of business schools who believe that every question has a single answer.

Supply and demand are not that simple. There are shades of truth.

Necessity is still the mother of invention. Challenges enable us to escape the limitations of the present and achieve our full potential.

Next time you are facing a tough time in your business, remember the power of surprise.

Just don’t let on to what you’re doing.

Chivalrous knights dedicated their lives in mediaeval times to searching for a mysterious chalice that they believed had great power.

They thought that once they held in in their hands, their problems would be over and that they would command the world.

They didn’t find their holy cup. Instead, they died lonely lives fighting unrelated wars in far-off lands.

And that’s a pity, because history records that they were people of considerable substance, well-educated and with vision. Moreover we believe these days that their chalice never existed in the first place. The knights clearly had the power within them to put their inner strength to more effective use. Their problem was that they believed they first needed an external reference point.

How many of us have been down that same road before?..  Chasing the impossible dream!

Trying to Escape The Rat Race by persuing unreachable goals is a similar issue.

Did we not all once think that we needed office power to succeed, or to have a famous brand behind our business?

These things may work for some – but they never can, nor ever will empower us to meet our true potential. This is because they act as closed gates, not open windows.

Scientists tell us that the potential of the human brain is open ended. And that’s where our imagination and inner power reside. This means that we already possess everything we need to achieve our dreams. That’s assuming we trust our vision, believe that everything is possible, and stick to our main goal.

Take a look at the lives of the world’s most successful people. They don’t rely on having office power in someone else’s business, or riding on the back of an existing brand. They believe in the power of their ideas instead. And because they do, they unleash the immense power of their self-belief.

Another mistake the crusaders made was that they diverted into other peoples’ wars that historians call crusades. These sapped their energy to the extent that if their holy grail really had existed – which it didn’t – they would have probably never found it either. And that’s another lesson we can learn from the world’s most successful people. They remain focussed on their prime objectives.

To escape the rat race, you must also stay focused!

One of the tragedies of human society is the number of people who end up burning out their lives in the effort to make someone else rich, and in the delusion that this is a worthwhile cause too.

Here’s my challenge to you…

Stop doing this. Chase the holy grail of your own dreams instead.

 

Contrary to popular expression the “the world came to a stand still”, whenever something bad happens, the world doesn’t come to a stand still, no matter what.

So why should yours when you are in debt?

To be successful in life, you have to overcome challenges that come your way.

Debt is one of the challenges that most people find difficult to deal with.

Want to get into debt, no problem just spend.

You want to get out; you will suffer painful cutbacks, turning down dear offers or opportunities, making tough decisions and sticking to them and saying “no” to many things.

Saving money is not the only solution there is for you to get out of debt or be financially stable.

You may not even save enough money if you do everything yourself.

To be free from debt you can also either make money and/or cut costs. Using all options can lead to getting rid of your debt and your finances improving drastically.

While reading an article about the “most admired” companies in Fortune’s latest survey on businesses, it would probably have been obvious to most people, including me, the company that takes the spotlight.

Apple maintains a consecutive five years lead, Google coming second and the first non-US company coming 14th.

Fed Ex is one such company that has utilized The Law of Focus. Of all the services they could have focused on they opted for only one. Overnight.

2. Chasing after someone else’s word and leaving yours will only lead to confusion and loss because someone else will take your word.

3. Do not make up a word instead you can pick a single powerful word from the dictionary that best describes your brand and is easy to log in customers minds.

4. Do not run after everything, you will lose money and valuable time. Instead focus on your word to give it a strong meaning.

5. Sending more than one marketing message can lead to death of your brand.

6. You have to keep raising the bar for the original word may not last forever in a prospect’s mind. You can change or add another word.

7. Bigger is not always better therefore abstain from diversifying into unrelated businesses.

It’s a great read. It contains zero bullshit, which is why I like it so much.

Brad goes into some detail about how he got involved online. He started off in the porn industry. Originally he open admits to being embarrassed about this. 

Now however he is proud to talk about it. Let’s face it, the porn business was at the forefront of Internet marketing. 

I can really associate with Brad here. I’ve owned various sex related sites, I’ve been a male stripper plus I’ve owned an escort agency. I also used to be embarrassed about these past ventures. Now I always openly talk about them. I’ve many a funny story to tell. Plus I learnt soo much about online and offline marketing due to this past. 

Brad also tells us about how he hit position 1 for the keyword ‘porn’. He shares some great traffic generating techniques. 

My favourite chapters are 19, ‘Not Caring What People Think’ and chapter 20, ‘Productivity’.  I got some amazing methods here on saving time and becoming efficient. 

Like Brad, I too don’t give a toss what people think.

There’s too many people online that alter their personality to suit the masses. This goes against the grain with me too. 

Brads method for creativity made me chuckle. I’ve actually never tried smoking marijuana. He reckons he has solved many a difficult problem, and come up with some amazing ideas whilst high.
