After You Have Achieved A Goal
When you have successfully achieved a goal its imperative you take the time to enjoy the satisfaction of having done so.
Absorb all the positive implications of the goal achievement, and observe the progress you have made towards other goals on your personal goal planner.
If the goal was one of you significant ones; reward yourself appropriately. Maybe book a weekend trip abroad or buy yourself something you have always wanted. Whatever the treat is try to gear it towards helping you achieve other goals. An example of this could be buying yourself a sailing lesson if one of your main goals is to sail around the Globe. All of this helps you build the self-confidence you deserve and subconsciously you are telling yourself that special treats follow successful goal completions.
With the new found extra experience of having achieved this goal, review the rest of your goal plans and change them where appropriate:
- If you achieved the goal too easily, make your next goals harder.
- If you noticed a deficit in your skills despite achieving the goal, decide whether to set goals to fix this.
- If you learned something that would lead you to change other goals, do so.
- If the goal took a dispiriting length of time to achieve, make the next goals a little easier.
If you have failed on goal it is important NOT to punish yourself. Failure to meet goals does not matter much, so long as you learn from it. Feed the lessons learned back into your goal setting program.
Your goals will evolve and adapt as time goes on. Adjust them regularly to reflect growth in your knowledge and experience, and if goals do not hold any attraction any longer, never be afraid to let them go.
Final Word
Goal setting is an important method of deciding what is important for you to achieve in your life. They separate what is important from what is irrelevant, or worst still; a distraction. They help you to motivate yourself and building self-confidence.
If you don’t already set goals, do so, starting right now. As you make this technique part of your life it will become second nature, you’ll find your career accelerating, and you’ll wonder how you lived without goals. Without having something to aim for and aspire to you will stroll aimlessly through life never really achieving much!
